Thousand-Arm Chenrezig

What is Nyunge?

Nyungne is a profound Buddhist purification practice of Tibetan Buddhism, that involves supplication of the Thousand-Arm aspect of Chenrezig, the Buddha of compassion (aka Avalokiteshvara). Translated as "abiding in the fast", Nyungne is said to be effective in the healing of illness, the nurturing of compassion, and the purification of negative karma.

One set of Nyungne consists of two full days of practice, plus the following morning.

  • The first day is a preliminary day, and the second day is the acual fasting day.
  • One takes the Tekchen Sojong Vow, a Mahayana vow of restoring and purifying ordination, with 8 precepts.
  • On the preliminary day, participants may eat only a single meal, with drinks permitted for the entire day. The meal is completely and purly vegetarian, which means that it is free from any meat substance as well as onions, garlic, eggs, etc.
  • The next day is a complete fast with no meals or drinks (including water).
One must also observe silence (no talking).
  • The fast is broken on the morning of the third day.

Each day of Nyungne involves three sessions

Each session consists of:

  • continuous recitations of the sadhana and mantra
  • mental visualizations of Chenrezig
  • prostrations* to the visualized Chenrezig

* Participants do prostrations according to their ability.
